The Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous churches the world over. It’s considered to be among the most important buildings of modern architecture thanks to its Modernista design created by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí.

It’s the second most-visited basilica in the world after Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Thousands of tourists flock there every year. For this reason, the church has become a key tourist destination.

Construction work started on the Sagrada Familia in 1882 but is still underway. The 19th of March 2017 was the 135th anniversary of the laying of the first stone for the church. Work is expected to be completely finished by 2026.

The temple is the result of a series of works carried out over different generations. When Antoni Gaudí presented the Sagrada Familia project he knew perfectly well that the whole building would take centuries to finish. For this reason, Gaudí devised a plan that involved the construction of the church in different stages.

Influences of the art of the Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is of great artistic value because it breaks with the traditional Gothic aesthetic of the time. Gaudí always believed that Gothic architecture didn’t reflect the true essence of nature. In his opinion, Gothic buildings were highly artificial.

Gaudí took his inspiration from nature to design the Sagrada Familia. This can be seen in the large number of curves and details both on the façade and inside the basilica itself.
